Career Development: The Psychology Of Leadership 3

I’m not sure if you’ve heard about rapport building. In the context of NLP, rapport building is a great way to initiate and maintain positive interaction with others. Which brings me to the point on why leaders need to understand it in the first place.

Problem #3: Inability to read other people’s intent

Have you ever had a time where you wish someone could see your point? Where they seem defensive and speak as though you intended to offend them? Well, welcome to the inner world of individual differences. Everyone has a different mental model.

Career Development: The Psychology Of Leadership 2

Here I continue from by previous post on the psychology of leadership. We delved into Problem #1 – The inability to listen.

Another major issue we have to explore in leadership is the ability for a person in power to be a people person.

Problem #2 – Not Being a People Person.

It doesn’t surprise me that a lot of leadership really is about building interpersonal skills and communication capabilities. Nor should it surprise you. Yet, most people think good leaders are those who are articulate.

Career Development: The Psychology Of Teams

I last talked about the Psychology Of Leadership and I thought it apt to discuss the topic on the psychology of teams, especially since I teach this to corporate clients in my Change Management workshops.

Have you noticed that some people work well in a team but some others just don’t? I’d been wondering about that myself and I realized several factors that influence the ability for someone to be part of such a team bonding event.

Career Development: How Not To Succeed In Life

I find that black and white thinking sabotages our chances of success. For instance, you may have come to a decision that your boss is very strategic in his focus, so you always give big picture ideas, and never prepare for a time when he needs details. When you get scolded by your boss, rather than accept responsibility, you blame your boss for having two minds.

Blaming is easy.
Taking responsibility is hard.
It’s no wonder so few people actually succeed in real life.

Career Development Singapore: How To Build A Great Team

It’s commonly known that the world is becoming more and more individualistic and generally, good teams are seldom seen.  This is just a picture of a stadium, but it’s a representation of the playing field that a team goes on to determine whether it wins or loses.

It begins with the understanding of two different approaches. The first is the independent mindset, the second is the interdependent mindset.

In many cases, individuals who are brought up with the independent mindset think about themselves and consequences for them the majority of the time. Very often, people in this category are deemed as individualistic and uncooperative, and seldom have this intention of bringing out a win-win situation within a team.

Career Development: How To Do It Smartly

I’ve been asked by people in corporate training programs about how they should develop themselves in their careers and it strikes me as very surprising that companies, no matter how much they commit to developing their people, often fall short on a variety of factors, particularly in career development and progression.

Some organizations actually develop their top leaders but not their entry level staff because of the belief that there is little reason why they have to focus on their new staff. Mostly, it boils down to budget constraints and the need to focus on those who are creating the biggest value at the moment. Unfortunately, that’s an undeniable fact. Individuals, therefore, must step up to the occasion in order to develop themselves.

Life Coaching Essentials

It seems a lot of people are looking to become good life coaches.

I’ve discovered that really great coaches are not hard to find, they’re just hard to develop. They are a special breed of people who want to do the right thing for a noble (sometimes lofty or idealistic) purpose.

So what exactly is coaching in the first place? As a good coach, you need (i) experience connecting with people you can help, (ii) looking for patterns of behavior that can help them move toward the direction of their choice, and (iii) resolve limiting patterns of behavior by looking for resources they already have, which they could missed.

Career Choices And Career Development: A New Category

I decided to add a new category because there have been a number of people who have in recent months been asking me about career development advice.  If you have questions regarding a specific type of career or career development advice, just drop a comment here.
