Parenting And Teaching: Gang Fights In Singapore

When I read about this article online, I was wondering why this didn’t hit the news any earlier. It’s an issue that has been around for a long time, and the public disturbance is alarming. On Oct 30th, a 19 year old Darren Ng Wei Jie, was killed by a bunch of hoodlums wielding knives and parangs.

In many cases of gang violence in Singapore, the problem comes about as a result of limited aspiration. Psychologist Carol Dweck, in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology Of Success, talks about the difference between two mindsets: one where people grow and develop through activity and learning from feedback, and the other where people tap into what they feel is their intelligence or IQ, resisting attempts to take part in activities that could result in failure and loss of face.

Parenting Issues: Teenagers and ‘stuff’

Ok, I decided to add to the repertoire here because it is about personal development, and one aspect I’ve constantly been asked by parents about is how to take care of a teenager, having counseled lots of them, and having taught over tens of thousands of them as a trainer over the last 15 years.

Main Issues:

  • My teenager is really doing badly in school, Stuart. How do I motivate my teen in school/college?
  • What to do when my teen is demonstrating rebellious behavior? I can’t seem to get a handle on the relationship thing.
